BRP Hot Rods – LSX G-body engine mount & oil pan (part 1)

Many of the G-body folks are familiar with the BRP Hot Rods motor mount kit.  I have personally used them on the “Hot Rod Regal” and appreciate the quality of the product.

In this 2 part post, a detailed installation of the BRP Hot Rods motor mount kit will be covered as well as the oil pan that was used (part 2).  In part 1, I will convey the photos and his thoughts on the BRP Hot Rods motor mount kit for the G-body.

BRP Hot Rods
Straight from BRP Hot Rods / Muscle Rods, this kit includes everything one needs to bolt in the LS motor to the G-body frame.  Mounts for the engine and frame, energy suspension bushings, Grade 8 hardware, and an energy suspension transmission mount. It also includes a transmission cross member, but more on that in the future.

Finding the right engine mounts for your special project can be one of the most challenging parts of the engine installation. You must consider what transmission and cross-member you will be using, what type of exhaust system you plan on installing, and what oil pan will fit your special build. All of which if not properly researched, will cause you a lot of wasted time and extra dollars.  BRP Hot Rods (770-751-0687) is a company that really has their act together when it comes to motor mounts. The fit and construction quality of the motor mounts are excellent, the packing and shipping were as promised, and finally, the price was well justified by the quality of the parts received. They will be the first ones to tell you that if you mix and match different company products, you may have some problems – and they are right!  In my opinion, they get a perfect score.

In this close up photo, it is visible to see where the old motor mounts were in relation to the new BRP Hot Rod motor mount. Also, note the location the driver side BRP motor mount and how it is installed in relation to the 3 holes above it – this is the proper location for this engine mount.

In this photo, the larger passenger side motor mount is shown in relation to the 3 holes in the frame.  Again, it is visible to see where the other motor mounts were previously.

This Photo illustrates the difference in size of the 2 frame side motor mounts and their proper location on the frame.  These are loosely installed until the engine is set down into the frame. Once the engine mounts are bolted to the frame mounts, then the frame mounts will be tightened down with lock nuts on the back side.

We bolted the engine mounts to a donor 5.3 test block to check the clearance of other parts. Oil pan clearance is one of the first things to check with aftermarket motor mounts. The next issue to check clearance on is the headers. BRP Hot Rods motor mounts have matched headers that they sell and is designed to work with the LH8 oil pan. The owner is going a different route – more on that in future posts.

In this last photo, the oil pan he used to clear the frame and the center link is a newer item that many people may not have had the chance to try. It is a cast pan produced by a well-known engine builder and works perfect with the BRP Hot Rods motor mounts.  This pan does not hang down below the frame, has internal baffling, has provisions for a screw on filter and tapped for an oil cooler, and comes with a pick-up tube.  The owner has contacted both BRP Hot Rods and the engine builder to let them know this combination works with zero alterations – bolt it in and go! Please check back soon for part 2 of the LSX G-body engine mount & oil pan combo for the name and part # of this oil pan.

Happy Hot Rodding
