The Mast Motorsports oil pan (part # 401-111) is a relatively new product that many G-body folks have yet to try. This is one “Trick” oil pan everybody – it’s got it all! It is a cast oil pan with a thick pan rail, which adds to rigidity when using an aluminum engine block. You use the standard GM oil pan gasket (GM part # 12612305), which combined with being a cast part, pretty much eliminates any chance of leaks. The oil pan is cored and baffeled, includes a sump baffle cover, a custom pick up tube that is optimally balanced for the oil capacity and the shallow sump for low ground clearance and holds 5 and 1/2 quarts of oil . The Mast Motorsports oil pan uses a GM style, screw-on oil filter (AC-Delco part # PF-46) that is in the factory location, and can be plumbed for an oil cooler. The cast oil pan clears a 4.125 inch stroke crankshaft, and it comes with the necessary hardware to install it. They also have a windage tray that will clear your stroked crankshaft and work seamlessly with this oil pan. These features make it a perfect choice for Auto Crossing, Racing, or Pro-Touring; but we found one more thing that makes this oil pan come out on top!
Catalog photos are great for one to get the overall concept of the part, but often times, some details are still needed. Mast Motorsports stepped up to the plate on this one as well. They have a build sheet online that can be viewed online directly that pretty much answers any question you may have about this oil pan! This is Mast Motorsports’ (trademarked) engineering drawing with the necessary measurements to see if it fits your application.
The owner acquired a Mast Motorsports oil pan for his LSX G-body project. Previously described in part 1 of this installation, “BRP Hot Rods – LSX G-body engine mount & oil pan (part 1)“, it was conveyed that he is using the BRP Hot Rods motor mounts / transmission crossmember kit. These two parts work together perfectly. A test fit procedure was performed using a donor block and a donor 700r4. As expected, there were no fit issues with the frame or motor mounts in relation to the oil pan, no steering linkage clearance issues, and no ground clearance issues which is illustrated in the next set of photos.
Once the engine assembly was lowered to the frame, the test 700R4 transmission was temporarily attached using the BRP Hot Rod crossmember.
When researching your oil pan, make certain to ask the manufacturer if their product will work with your specific motor mounts. The Mast Motorsports oil pan clears the center link from lock to lock using the BRP Hot Rod LS swap kit.
Finally, the last feature that make this combination something to seriously consider when you perform your LS Swap into a G-body: Removing the oil pan without removing the engine or transmission!
When I use to race, we would kill for the ability to remove the oil pan from the engine without having to pull the engine. We could inspect the bottom end or change the gasket in the pit and get right back on the track. – a past friend
In this last set of photos, we took the weight off the engine, pulled the motor mount bolts, raised the engine and transmission and removed the oil pan!
The Mast Motorsports oil pan is designed to fit multiple GM platforms, using multiple types of motor mounts with maximum clearance and maximum performance in mind. In the LSX G-body, he used the BRP Hot Rods LS swap kit to accomplish this LS installation with the Mast Motorsports LS oil pan. Combining these parts illustrates the superior engineering and superior quality of these two companies and their respective parts.
In this article, we focused on the oil pan from Mast Motosports. They say it is “The LS Pan That Works!” I would have to agree!
Keep checking back for future exciting updates to project: “Hot Rod Regal”! Expect more new parts and some cool engineering ideas on the way!
Happy Hot Rodding
