All Jacked Up! Remove the Regal Frame

The upper side of the floor plan in the cab of the car was clean, the lower floor pan was a different story. It was very dirty with caked on road grime, under coating and surface rust breaking through. I inspected the frame rail channels and knew I had to remove the Regal frame to get to that area to clean it. For cleaning the lower surface I used a wire wheel brush. The areas with thick under coating, I used a torch to heat it up and a paint scraper to remove it (which worked great). Separating the G-body frame from the body, I used 2 jacks (a craftsman 3 ton and a harbor freight 2 ton jack), 4 heavy-duty jack stands (from harbor freight), and a pair of 4X4 posts. I inched it up in the front and then in the back, going back and forth to get the necessary altitude before the frame could roll out from under the body (and by altitude, that means it was up in the air – so don’t do this on a windy day!).

If you have access to a lift, use it. This operation is not for the faint of heart.

The frame was in very good condition, but it needed stripped, cleaned, and painted. No major rust issues or damage. I parked the frame beside the body (its nice having at least a 2 car garage).

After the frame removal, I started working on the bottom side of the floor pans and the firewall clean up.  I will show you the before and after pics for this clean up of these areas in the next post.
